BirdLife International Launches Pioneering Biodiversity Data Platform with Futures Wild & Trifork
Futures Wild, a consultancy specialising in custom data platforms for nature - together with their strategic innovation partner Trifork - today announced the successful launch of the BirdLife DataZone, a groundbreaking open-access platform developed in close partnership with BirdLife International — the world’s largest partnership of national nature conservation coalition organisations.
The BirdLife DataZone offers a step-change in how biodiversity data are accessed, visualised, and applied — putting decades of evidence-guided insights into the hands of policymakers, ESG leaders, researchers, and conservation practitioners around the globe.
“We set out to build a platform that doesn’t just share data; it drives action,” said Stefan Ferguson, Co-founder of Futures Wild. “By combining BirdLife’s scientific authority with modern digital design, we created a user-first experience that helps transform how the world understands and responds to avian and habitat conservation data.”
The new BirdLife DataZone serves as a digital gateway to the most comprehensive data on the world’s birds — a vital proxy for global ecosystem health. The platform brings together:
- Detailed profiles on 11,000+ bird species
- 13,000+ sites including Global Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) / Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) with threat and protection data
- Interactive geospatial tooling for exploration and download
- Structured pathways for research, policy, and conservation planning
The result is a highly navigable, intuitive, and open platform tailored for both expert users and wider audiences. All content is underpinned by BirdLife’s globally recognised Red List and KBA datasets.
Why does it matter?
What it enables people to do - that they couldn't before - is access different data sources and formats in one view, helping define how different touch points compile into an holistic assessment of the state of the world's birds.
Tabular formats with quantified data can now be surfaced next to visual geospatial data, which showcase behavioural and geographical patterns. This is combined with a collaborative community of leading scientists who offer specialist knowledge via text accounts on specific species and sites. All in all, it allows people to dissect their hypotheses with varied and accurate data for their particular use case; informing policy and driving nature-positive action.
As biodiversity becomes a defining metric in global sustainability frameworks - from the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) - demand for accessible, reliable nature data is surging. Platforms like the BirdLife DataZone help bridge the gap between science and decision-making.
“BirdLife International is proud to have partnered with Futures Wild and Trifork to develop the new DataZone, presenting our information to decision-makers in a dynamic, engaging, visually attractive platform” announced Dr Stuart Butchart, BirdLife’s Chief Scientist.
The BirdLife DataZone is live and freely accessible to users worldwide. Futures Wild/Trifork will continue to support future development as BirdLife International expands the platform’s features, datasets, and user tools.
